PSLE English Oral Tips: Stimulus-based Conversation (SBC)

by | Jun 27, 2023 | 0 comments

1. Introduction | PSLE English Oral Tips

The PSLE English Oral component is made up of two sections, Reading Aloud and Stimulus-based Conversation (SBC). For Reading Aloud, students are assessed on their ability to pronounce and articulate words clearly, as well as their ability to read fluently with appropriate expression and rhythm. For SBC, students are assessed on their ability to give a personal response to a visual stimulus and engage in a conversation on a relevant topic.

Doing well in the oral component of the PSLE can greatly contribute to a student’s overall achievement level (AL) score in the subject. Contrary to the belief of many, scoring 28, 29, or even 30/30 is not mission impossible. Apart from regular and mindful practice, having the right strategies to tackle this component is also the recipe for success.

At Learning Gems, we believe in equipping our students with effective strategies to excel. That’s why we developed the SEEE framework, a proven approach that empowers students to plan and develop their SBC responses with ease and confidence.

Q1: Would you want to volunteer for this event? Why or why not?

SEEE
Yes, I would want to volunteer for this event. This event calls for volunteers to help shop for groceries, clean the homes of beneficiaries, and collect and distribute preloved clothes and toys, and these are what I am interested in.

SEEE_1
Firstly, I feel that this is a very meaningful event as we are helping the underprivileged and the less fortunate meet their basic needs with provision of groceries and essential items. This will help improve their well-being and quality of life.

Apart from that, by collecting and distributing preloved items, we are also helping to reduce waste and promote sustainability as we extend the lifespan of these items. This promotes the idea of reducing and reusing which benefits the environment and conserves resources. Taking part in this event kills two birds with one stone, as we are not only helping the underprivileged but also doing our part for the environment.

Lastly, volunteering demonstrates my compassion and empathy to their plight. I feel that I am very fortunate because I do not need to worry about my basic needs. So I would want to do what I can to help alleviate their difficulties and provide them with comfort and support during challenging times, no matter how small the efforts may be.

SEEE
I remember watching a video about a group of volunteers who offer their time and effort to re-paint and spring clean an elderly couple’s home. Although they were exhausted at the end of the day, they felt fulfilled and were very happy to have made a difference in the elderly couple’s lives. At that moment, I felt very inspired and would love for an opportunity to be able to contribute my time and effort in making their lives better.

Therefore, I would definitely be interested in this event. In fact, I will even ask my family and friends to take part in this event together with me!

Q2: What would you do to encourage more people to volunteer?

SEEE
To encourage more people to volunteer, I think we can do three things.

SEEE_1
First and foremost, we can raise awareness. This can be done in many ways, such as through posters, social media, e-bulletin to residents, electronic advertisement boards at bus stops, school newsletters and assembly talks. Sometimes, people want to play their part, but they may not know how to go about doing it. By giving people clear information about how they can volunteer and showing them the steps to take, we can help them turn their willingness into action.

Secondly, we can offer flexible volunteering opportunities. This is because both students and adults have different schedules and commitments. By offering flexible volunteering opportunities such as one-time events, short-term projects, or even virtual volunteering, we can participate based on our interests and schedules, and there will always be an opportunity available for everyone.

Finally, I think that it is also important to recognise and publicise volunteer contributions. We can do this by sharing stories and testimonies of volunteers and highlight the impact of their efforts. This not only makes the volunteers feel appreciated, but it also creates a ripple effect, motivating others to do the same.

SEEE

I remember a volunteer group from the North West Youth Assembly coming to speak during one of my school’s assembly sessions. They shared that they organise many community events and initiatives to try and build a more cohesive community. Hearing them speak about the events that they had organised and the upcoming events they have planned, I felt inspired to join and make a difference in the lives of the residents. I would say the assembly programme was effective in getting me and my friends interested to find out more about the volunteer opportunities that the community has to offer!

SEEE

In conclusion, to encourage more people to volunteer, we can raise awareness, offer flexible opportunities, and recognise volunteer contributions. If we can all do our part and lend a helping hand, the world would definitely become a better place for everyone!

Q3: How can schools promote a culture of kindness?

SEEE
There are multiple ways schools can promote a culture of kindness.

SEEE_1
One such way is to have kindness campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of kindness. Kindness campaigns provide a platform for us to spread the importance of being kind to one another. Kindness begets kindness. When we engage in acts of kindness, we not only bring joy to others but also inspire them to pay it forward, creating a ripple effect that brightens countless lives.

SEEE_1
I was once involved in a donation drive that my school organised to help the underprivileged. We donated pre-loved items such as clothes, toys and stationery, and then sorted and distributed these items to those who needed them. It was amazing to see how everyone came together to pitch in and make a difference. When the donation drive ended, even those who were initially reluctant to participate told the teachers that they wanted to be part of next year’s drive!

SEEE_2
Another way schools can promote a culture of kindness is by recognising and celebrating acts of kindness. When schools acknowledge and celebrate acts of kindness, it helps everyone see how important kindness is. It makes us feel good about being kind and inspires others to be kind too.

In my school, we have a special ceremony called the “Kindness Awards” every month during assembly. It is a big deal and all of us look forward it! Students who have done something kind get called up on stage. They receive certificates and little gifts to say, “Well done!” The school also shares their kind actions in announcements and newsletters, so everyone knows about it. I remember when my friend Sarah helped a new student feel welcome by introducing her to everyone and bringing her around the school, helping her to settle in. For that, Sarah got an award. It made her day and also made her feel extremely proud of herself. It inspired all of us to want to be kind too!

SEEE
In a nutshell, campaigns like donation drives and recognising acts of kindness can help schools create a culture where empathy, compassion, and respect are valued. It is through the collective effort of students and teachers that a culture of kindness can truly thrive.
